Hello! If you're new here, here's how this works: in the beginning of the month, I ask a question. I get answers from people, hopefully. I take one of those answers and write a short story based on it, then put it out on the last day of the month. Sometimes they're actually pretty good, and sometimes they're a real mess. But at least every time I put some words on paper. Screen. Whatever.
Normally. This May I'm doing something different: instead of bringing you a new story, I'm bringing you an old one.
(I know the intro is long. Just bare with me. Or jump directly to the last paragraph, if you don't care.)
I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember.
When I was maybe nine or ten we once got a homework assignment to write a story. I worked on it hard enough I didn't have time to finish it on time, and mom had to send with me a note to the teacher saying it wasn't out of laziness I didn't have my homework done, and that I would finish it that night.
When I was ten I wrote a story tens of pages long about me and my imaginary friends. We had magic and had to go save a friend who had been kidnapped by elves. I think I still have the book I printed out and crafted myself.
When I was fourteen I wrote a story not quite long enough to be called a novel about a girl who's transported through magic to Atlantis, which has been completely isolated from the rest of the world since it sank into the sea in ancient times. There she meets a boy from her class, who had gone missing earlier that summer, because he had also magically transported to Atlantis, and they need to find a way back home. At about a hundred pages, it's still the longest complete thing I've ever managed to write. (On my own. Some of the collaborative stories on this blog are probably longer.)
When I was seventeen I started writing a story about a girl whose crush dies in a car crash, and then she somehow (I really don't remember how) she ends up in a coma, and they meet again in a spirit plane of existence where they need to help the guy to move on into afterlife and her to wake up from her coma. I never finished it, I never will, and I hope all copies are destroyed.
In my early twenties I tried to write a novel based on the premise of a game called werewolf (or mafioso, or, nowadays, Among Us): there's a tiny village where some of the villagers are werewolves, and the villagers have to figure out who those are before everyone is dead. I eventually stopped working on it, because I realised I'm simply not good enough to do a good job of that particular story. Maybe one day I'll pick it up again, because I kinda stand by the fact that the premise can grow into a good story, and because I love some of the main characters.
Right now I'm pretending to work on a longer story too, but the older I've gotten the more complicated writing has become: I've gone from very small worlds to very big. For this story, I want to develop not only the complete ecology of a alien planet that doesn't have nights and days, but also a dozen cultures we travel through during the story. And I want to do it well. Which means there is a ridiculous amount of research and worldbuilding to do before I even scratching the surface of what I want to have. Most of the time it's just too overwhelming, so lately I've taken comfort in these monthly stories, where the scale is very small, and no one, including me, is expecting me to write something good every time.
Are any of the stories I've written during the past more than twenty years good? I don't know. But they're all better than the previous one, and I think that might be the important thing.
Anyway. The point is, I've been writing stories for almost my whole life. So when three different people answered ice cream to my May question, my thoughts went to the short play I wrote (and starred and directed) one vappu (the Finnish labor day) when I was a kid. So I thought to myself: what if I could find that play, and had a throwback Thursday (Monday) on the blog instead of writing something new?
I went through a bunch of old documents on a hard drive and a couple of boxes of old papers in my old room at my parents' house, and I found not one but three printed copies of the play.
It's here in Finnish, because it was written in Finnish. If somehow
there's someone who wants to read it in English, you can find a translation by scrolling past the Finnish one. I don't have an audio version, because it seems to me that in order to
make an audio version of a play I'd need to have different people for
different parts and some background sounds and stuff.
So here it is: a play that I wrote about May and ice cream when I was thirteen. Is it any good? No. Definitely not. Even the punctuation is bad. But maybe it shows I've learned something about writing in the last fifteen years?

Linnea ja Veera kävelevät torilla, kun huomaavat, että valiojäätelökojun myyjä ryntää ulos kojustaan.
Hanna: Apua!!! Minut on ryöstetty!!
Linnea: Veera katso!! Mitä tuolla tapahtuu?
Linnea ja Veera juoksevat äkkiä paikalle muun väkijoukon sekaan.
Veera: Mitä on tapahtunut? Kuka on ryöstetty??
Hanna (hätääntyneenä): Tulin juuri kojulleni ja huomasin, että kassakaappi oli ryöstetty! Eikä jäätelöäkään ollut yhtään, ei edes valkosipuluvaniljaa!! Ja vielä näin vappuna!!
Juuso: Oletko jo hälyyttänyt poliisin?
Linnea (itsevarmana): Pöh! Ei tässä mitään poliiseja tarvita! Saannen esittäytyä; olen Linnea ja tämä on luokkatoverini Veera.
Hanna: Hanna.
Linnea: Olemme vapaaehtoisia tutkimaan rikosta.
Jannika: Minä olen Jannika ja tässä on pikkuveljeni Juuso, voisimmeko mekin olla jotenkin avuksi? (kaivaa suklaapatukan taskusta, kuorii sen ja alkaa syödä)
Juuso: Hei! Minulta ei kysytty mitään!! En halua!!
Jannika: Ole hiljaa (maiskuti maiskuti) tai kerron äidille (mussun mussun)!!
Veera: Öh... No, tehdäänkö diili?? Me neljästään ratkaisemme rikoken, jos sinä tarjoat meille sitten jäätelöt!
Jannika: Joo!! Suklaata!! (Jannika nuolaisee huuliaan)
Hanna (epäröi): No tuota... Hyvä on... Oletteko varmoja, ettei virkavaltaa tarvita?? Teillehän voi sattua vaikka mitä!
Linnea: Joo joo. Asia hoidossa. (kääntyy Jannikaan ja Juusoon päin) Tavataan huomenna Sokoksen edessä kello kolme!!
Jannika: Sovittu!!
Juuso: Eikä!!
Jannika (murhaava katse): Nyt hiljaa tai minä syön sen suklaalevyn, jonka ostit!!
Juuso: Hah!! Söisit sen kyllä muutenkin...
Väkijoukko hälvenee omille asioilleen unohtaen pian koko tapauksen.
Kohtaus 2: Rikoksen jäljillä.
Veera ja Linnea kävelevät Sokkarille päin.
Linnea: Olikohan tämä nyt niin viisasta... Hanna oli oikeassa. Meillehän voi sattua vaikka mitä!
Veera: Äh! Tämähän on vain seikkailua. Hei katso! Tuolla ne.. öö.. -ketkä-nyt-olivatkaan- ovat!
Jannika: Moi!! Tulittehan te vihdoinkin!! Öö... mitkä teidän nimet olikaan??
Linnea: Linnea (osoittaa itseään) ja Veera (osoittaa Veeraa). Entä te?
Juuso: Jannika ja Pete.
Jannika: Juuso!
Juuso: Eikun Pete!!!
Jannika: Juuso
(tätä jatkuu hetken aikaa)
Veera: Oli miten oli Juusopete, niin palataampa kuitenkin asiaan! Nyt meidän täytyy päättää, mistä aloitetaan.
Jannika: Odota. Minun täytyy käydä ostamassa suklaata.
Linnea: Jannika... (varoittavasti) No tuota, minä mietin eilen illalla kuka se olisi voinut ryövätä kojun.
Jannika: No, mihin päädyit?
Linnea: Se olisi voinut olla kuka tahansa... (heh) Mutta... minä ajattelin että jos käydään katsomassa sitä kioskia vielä ja katsotaan sitten...
(Sokos-kyltti vedetään ylös ja valiojäätelökioski pannaan paikalleen. Kävelevät kojulle)
Linnea: Hmm... Lukkoa ei ole murrettu...
Veera: ...eikä ikkunassa näy murtijälkiä...
Linnea: Kuka täällä sitten on olllut?? Miten joku on voinut päästä sisälle??
Jannika: Öö... Jos joku on käynyt pöllimässä sen avaimen Hannalta...??
Juuso kaivaa taskustaan suklaata Jannikan katsoessa muualle ja alkaa syödä sitä. Jannika huomaa ja nappaa suklaan ja tunkee sen taskuunsa. Hanna kurkkaa kojun ikkunasta.
Hanna: Mitä te täällä teette?? Mitä te teette??
Veera: Eikös meillä ole diili, eikö??
Hanna: Ai niin, te olette niitä... No, minä en pidä siitä, että kojuni ympärillä pyöritään!! Häipykää!!
He kävelevät pois. (kioski otetaan pois). Kaikki pysähtyvät keskelle näyttämöä.
Juuso: Miks se täti hääti meidät pois?? Mitä me tehtiin??
Jannika: Ole sinä hiljaa kun et ymmärrä...!! Ei me tehty mitään... (Kaivaa suklaan taskustaan.)
Linnea: No ei saatu mitään selville... Olipa siitä taas hyötyä... Huomenna, sama aika, sama paikka??
Jannika: Okei.
Juuso: Eikä!!
Kohtaus 3: Seuraavana päivänä
(Sokos kyltti) Linnea ja Veera seisovat keskellä näyttämöä. Jannika ja Juuso tulevat.
Veera: Hah!! Tällä kertaa oltiin jo ennen teitä! Ja vielä reilusti!!
Jannika: Miten niin reilusti??
Linnea: No meiltä loppui tunti sitten koulu ja tultiin sieltä suoraan kaupunkiin. Hoideltiin omia asioita.
Veera: Niin, minä kävin ostamassa vaatteita ja... Mitä sinä edes teit, Linnea?
Linnea: No minä kävin jututtamassa sitä Hannaa... Se sanoi, että pitää vara-avainta kotinsa pihallaan olevan kukkaruukun alla. Aika vaikeaa tosin oli saada edes sitä hänestä irti. Ei halunnut kertoa.
Jannika: No sittenhän tämä juttu on ihan selvä: se rosvo tiesi tuon ja meni yöllä ottamassa sen avaimen ja kävi ryöväämässä sen kioskin!!
Juuso: niin!! Nyt voidaan lähtee kotiin!!
Veera: Älä hoppuile! Me ei tiedetä vielä että kuka se oli. Tästä se vasta alkaa!!
(Juuso irvistää)
Jannika (virnistäen Juusolle): Elämä on...Saannen esittäytyä; olen Linnea ja tämä on luokkatoverini Veera.
Linnea: No, mitäs tehdään, ei tästä oikein pitemmällä tällä tavalla pääse. Meidän pitäisi lähteä etsimään jostain johtolankoja. Käydäänkö kysymässä muilta Valiojäätelökioskien myyjiltä?
Veera: En tiedä, onko siitä hyötyä. Käydään mieluummin kuulustelemassa Hannaa.
Kaikki lähtevät kävelemään, Sokos-kyltti pois, jäätelökioski paikalleen. Kaikki kioskin luona.
Hanna: Taas te. Mitä te nyt taas haluatte?? Luovuttakaa jo, ette te sitä varasta saa.
Linnea: Kyllä saadaan! Haluaisimme vain kysyä yhtä juttua: kuinka moni tiesi kukkaruukun alla olevasta vara-avaimesta?
Hanna: Ei todellakaan kuulu teille!
Veera: No ei sitten... Yritämme tässä selvittää sinun jäätelökioskin varasta! Ei sitten, ei auteta.
Hanna: No okei okei. (Miettivä ilme) No tuota ainakin mieheni ja eräs toinen jäätelömyyjä täältä tiesivät siitä.
Jannika (kääntyy selin Hannaan): No sitten se varmaan oli se tuon kaveri! Miks sen mies olisi ryövännyt sen?
Linnea: En tiedä. Tätä täytyy miettiä. Hei, hajaannutaan etsimään lisää johtolankoja. Jannika, annatko puhelinnumerosi minulle ja Veeralle. Onko Juusolla kännykkää?
Jannika: Ei, hän voi tulla minun kanssani.
Juuso: En minä halua!
Veera: Hän voi tulla minun kanssani. Ota sinäkin numeroni.
Jannika: Kiitos. Tässä minun numeroni.
Linnea: Tavataan kauppahallissa tunnin kuluttua.
Kaikki lähtevät kävelemään eri suuntiin, Juuso Veeran mukaan. (Jäätelökioski pois)
(Tuolit keskelle lattiaa puoliympyrään)
Kohtaus 4: Ottakaa varas kiinni!
Kaikki tulevat sisään ja istuvat tuoleille.
Veera: No, mihin tulokseen päädyitte??
Jannika: Söin kokonaisen tuplasuklaatuutin, enkä keksinyt yhtään mitään.
Linnea: Minä taas keksin. Miettikääpä ensinnäkin Juusoa.
Jannika: Mitä hänestä?
Juuso: Mitä minusta?
Linnea: Mitä hän sanoi, kun Hanna hääti meidät tutkimasta sitä jäätelökioskia.
Veera: En muista. Mitä hän sitten sanoi?
Linnea: "Miksi se täti hääti meidät pois?"
Jannika: Mitä siitä?
Juuso: Niin, miksi, en tajua vieläkään.
Linnea: Hän ei halunnut, että tutkimme sitä. Jos vaikka löytäisimme jotain.
Veera: Mutta sehän olisi vain hänen etunsa, että löydämme varkaan.
Linnea: Tai sitten ei.
Juuso: Miten niin ei?
Linnea: Ja sitten miksi hän antoi tehtävän meille eikä hälyyttänyt oikeita poliiseja apuun?
Jannika: No?
Linnea: Hän luuli, ettemme keksi, että varas oli hän.
Veera: Hän?
Jannika: Miten niin hän?
Linnea: Tarvitsi rahoja johonkin. En tiedä. Ja miksi hän ei halunnut auttaa meitä? Sama syy.
Jannika (heiluttaa käsiään): Kaikki täsmää.
Veera: Mennään!! (nousee ylös)
Juuso: Ottakaa varas kiinni!!
Kaikki nousevat ylös (tuolit pois, jäätelökioski) ja lähtevät kävelemään. Kävellään kierros ja tullaan takaisin kioskin luo.
Hanna: Mitä te nyt taas?
Veera: Olisi asiaa.
Juuso: Selvitimme rikokseksi.
Hanna (kummastellen): Ihanko totta? No, kuka varas oli?
Linnea: Sinä.
Hanna: Minä!?
Veera: Joo, tunnusta pois.
Hanna: Ei, nyt olette väärässä. En se minä ollut.
Linnea: Miksi sitten häädit meidät pois, kun tutkimme kioskiasi?
Henna: Ai silloin. Olin vain hermostunut, ei muuta.
Jannika: Kuka sitten oli varas, tiedätkö sen?
Hanna: Ei täällä oikeasti ollut varkaita.
Veera: Täh?
Hanna: Se oli se toinen jäätelönmyyjä. Asia on nääs niin, että me jäätelönmyyjät saamme syödä tätä jäätelöä niin paljon kuin haluamme ja hän kävi ottamassa täältä jäätelöt vappukutsuilleen.
Jannika: Miksei hän ottanut omasta kioskistaan?
Hanna: Se ei ole vielä käytössä.
Linnea: Entä kassalipas?
Hanna: Ystäväni oli vain siirtänyt sitä, niin etten huomannut sitä.
Veera: Mistä hän sai avaimen?
Hanna: Kaikkiin jäätelökioskeihin käy samanlaiset avaimet, eli hänellä oli omat. No, joka tapauksessa, haluatteko jäätelöä?
Linnea: Mutta eihän me ratkaistu tapausta.
Hanna: Ei haittaa, minä tarjoan! Kuka ensimmäisenä?
Jannika: Minä! Minä! Tuplasuklaajäätelö suklaakastikkeella ja suklaaströsselillä!
Hanna: Taidat pitää suklaasta?
Veera: Joo, hän rakastaa sitä!
Linnea: Kuulkaa, nyt olen saanut uusia ystäviä, ja olen oppinut tuntemaankin heidät! Suklaasisarukset!
Jannika: Joo, ja te Älykkö ja Urheiluhullu!!
Veera: Mistä tiesit, että pidän urheilusta?
Jannika: Arvasin vaan...

Scene 1: Out on the town
Linnea and Veera are walking at the market place when they notice the vendor of the ice crea kiosk rushing out of her kiosk.
Hanna: Help!!! I've been robbed!!
Linnea: Veera look!! What's happening there?
Linnea and Veera run quickly to join the gathering crowd.
Veera: What's happened? Who's been robbed??
Hanna (panicky): I just came to my kiosk and noticed that the safe had been robbed! And there wasn't any ice cream either, not even garlic-vanilla!! And on vappu of all times!!
Juuso: Have you alerted the police yet?
Linnea (confident): Bah! We don't need the police! Let me introduce myself: I'm Linnea and this is my classmate Veera.
Hanna: Hanna.
Linnea: We volunteer to investigate the crime.
Jannika: I'm Jannika and this is my little brother Juuso, could we also do something to help? (digs a chocolate bar from her picket, opens it and begins to eat)
Juuso: Hey! I wasn't asked!! I don't want to!!
Jannika: Shut up (nomnom) or I'll tell mom (nomnom)!!
Veera: Um... Well, let's make a deal?? We four will solve the crime, if you then offer us ice cream!
Jannika: Yes!! Chocolate!! (Jannika licks her lips)
Hanna (uncertain): Well... Okay... Are you sure, that we don't need the authorities?? Something could happen to you!
Linnea: Yes yes. It's fine. (turns to Jannika and Juuso) Let's meet tomorrow in front of Sokos at three!!
Jannika: Deal!!
Juuso: No!!
Jannika (murderous stare): Quiet now or I'll eat the chocolate bar you bought!!
Juuso: Ha!! You'd eat it either way...
The crowd disappears about their business and soon forgets the whole incident.
Scene 2: After the crime.
Veera and Linnea walk towards Sokos.
Linnea: I wonder is this was smart... Hanna was right. Something could happen to us!
Veera: Bah! This is an adventure. Hey look! There... Um.. -whoever-they-were- are there!
Jannika: Hi!! You finally came!! Um... what were your names??
Linnea: Linnea (points to herself) and Veera (points to Veera). And you?
Juuso: Jannika and Pete.
Jannika: Juuso!
Juuso: No, Pete!!!
Jannika: Juuso
(this goes on for a bit)
Veera: However it is Juusopete, let's get back to business! Now we need to choose where to begin.
Jannika: Wait. I need to go buy chocolate.
Linnea: Jannika... (warning) Well, I was thinking last night who it could have been taht robbed the kiosk.
Jannika: Well, what didi you come up with?
Linnea: It would have been anyone... (heh) But... I thought if we went and took a look at the kiosk again and then decided what to do...
(Sokos-sign is pulled up and the kiosk is put in its place. They walk to the kiosk)
Linnea: Hmm... The lock hasn't been brokenu...
Veera: ...and there's no sign of a break-in on the window...
Linnea: So who's been here?? How did someone get inside??
Jannika: Um... If someone stole the key from Hanna...??
Juuso digs out chocolate from his pocket when Jannika isn't looking and starts to eat it. Jannika notices and snaches the chocolate and stuffs it in her pocket Hanna peeks out of the kiosk window.
Hanna: What are you doing here?? What are you doing??
Veera: We had a deal, didn't we??
Hanna: Oh, right, you're those... Well, I don't like people mililng around my kiosk!! Go away!!
They walk away. (remove the kiosk). Everyone stops in the middle of the stage.
Juuso: Why did the lady drive us away?? What did we do??
Jannika: Shut up, you don't understand...!! We didn't do anything... (Digs the chocolate from her pocket.)
Linnea: Well, we didn't find out anything... Very useful... Tomorrow, same time, same place??
Jannika: Okay.
Juuso: No!!
Scene 3: The next day
(Sokos sign) Linnea and Veera are standing in the middle of the stage. Jannika and Juuso come.
Veera: Ha!! This time we were before you! A lot before!!
Jannika: What do you mean a lot??
Linnea: well our school ended an hour ago and we came to the center directly from there. Ran some errand.
Veera: Yes, I went to buy some clothes and... What did you do, Linnea?
Linnea: Well I went to talk to that Hanna... She said she keeps a spare key under a flower pot in her yard. Though it was hard to get even that out of her. Didn't want to tell.
Jannika: Well then this is clear: the robber knew taht and went to get the key in the middle of the night and robbed the kiosk!!
Juuso: Yes!! Now we can go home!!
Veera: Don't hustle! We don't know who it was yet. This is only the beginning!!
(Juuso frowns)
Jannika (grins at Juuso): Tough life...
Linnea: Well, what do we do, we can't really get farther like this. We should go search for clues. Should we ask the other ice cream kiosk vendors?
Veera: I don't know if that helps. We should go interrogate Hanna instead.
All start walking, remove Sokos sign, set the kiosk. Everyone at the kiosk.
Hanna: You again. What do you want again?? Give up, you won't get the robber.
Linnea: Yes, we will! We would just like to ask one thing: how many people knew about the spare key under the flower pot?
Hanna: Definitely none of your business!
Veera: Fine... We're trying to find the robber of your ice cream kiosk here! But fine, we won't help.
Hanna: Okay, okay. (thoughtful face) Well at least my husband and another ice cream vendor from here knew about it.
Jannika (turns her back to Hanna): Well then it was probably her friend! Why would her husband have robbed her?
Linnea: I don't know. This needs some thinking. Hey, let's split to look for more clues. Jannika, would you give your phone number to me and Veera. Does Juuso have a cell phone?
Jannika: No, but he can come with me.
Juuso: I don't want to!
Veera: He can come with me. Here, have my number.
Jannika: Thank you. Here's my number.
Linnea: Let meet in the market hall in an hour.
All start to walk in different directions, Juuso goes with Veera. (Take the kiosk away)
(Chairs in a half circle in the middle of the floor)
Scene 4: Catch the thief!
Everyone comes in and sits on teh chairs.
Veera: Well, what did you come up with??
Jannika: I ate an entire double chocolate ice cream cone and I couldn't think of anything.
Linnea: But I did. Think first about Juuso.
Jannika: What about him?
Juuso: What about me?
Linnea: What did he say when Hanna drove us away from examining the ice cream kiosk.
Veera: I don't remember. What did he say?
Linnea: "Why did the lady drive us away?"
Jannika: What about it?
Juuso: Yeah, why, I still don't get it.
Linnea: She didn't want us examining it. We might find something.
Veera: But it would be good for her if we found the thief.
Linnea: Or maybe not.
Juuso: What do you mean not?
Linnea: And then why did she give us the task and didn't alert the real police to help?
Jannika: Well?
Linnea: She thought we wouldn't figure our she's the thief.
Veera: She?
Jannika: What do you mean she?
Linnea: Needed the money for something. I don't know. And why didn't she want to help us? The same reason.
Jannika (waves her arms): Everything fits.
Veera: Let's go!! (stands up)
J: Catch the thief!!
Everyone stands up (remove the chairs, kiosk) and start to walk. Walk a loop and return to the kiosk.
Hanna: What is it again?
Veera: We want to talk.
Juuso: We solved your crime.
Hanna (wondering): Really? Well, who was the thief?
Linnea: You.
Hanna: Me!?
Veera: Yes, confess.
Hanna: No, you're wrong. It wasn't me.
Linnea: Then why did you drive us away when we were examining your kiosk?
Henna: Oh that. I was just nervous, that's all.
Jannika: Then who was the thief, do you know that?
Hanna: There wasn't really a thief.
Veera: What?
Hanna: It was the other ice cream vendor. The thing is that we ice cream vendors can eat this ice cream as much as we want and she came to take ice cream for her vappu party from here.
Jannika: Why didn't she take it from her own kiosk?
Hanna: It's not in use yet.
Linnea: And the coffer?
Hanna: My friend had simply moved it, so I didn't notice it.
Veera: Where did she get the key?
Hanna: The same key opens all the ice cream kiosks, so she had her own. Well, anyway, do you want ice cream?
Linnea: But we didn't solve the case.
Hanna: That's okay, it's on me! Who's first?
Jannika: Me! Me! Double chocolate ice cream with chocolate dressing and chocolate sprikles!
Hanna: I guess you like chocolate?
Veera: Yeah, she loves it!
Linnea: Listen, not I've gotten new friends, and learned to know them too! The chocolate siblings!
Jannika: Yeah, and you are the Brainiac and the Sporty!!
Veera: How did you know I like sports?
Jannika: Just guessing...
