Same old same old

Well then. Maria and Leila left for Finland yesterday. They'll be back .... the 7th, I think. Until then it's me and Kaija and Mark. After that it's three days until my trip and I am.. actually not excited because I haven't internalized that it is actually so close. Don't worry, a full blown panic will come. If not now, then by the time I'm sitting on the airplane and can no longer deny that it is happening. But yeah.

I have a very good topic to talk about next week, but that is for next week and I don't know what to talk about now. Uh. I managed to get my drawing tablet working. That's good. Drew a tiny Cas with wings. It turned out ok, but I am very much out of practice and I have no idea what to draw, so I want everyone to comment and tell me one thing I should draw. Like, anything. There is also this palette meme going around in tumblr and that seems fun, so if you feel like it, you can also choose a color scheme. I'll put that in the end.

Went to the movies last weekend. X-Men and Maleficent. They were good. Although I am a bit confused about the end of X-Men and I am sorta disappointed (although not surprised) that the guy playing human!Diaval was not black. Because I think he should've been. I mean he's a raven, they are black. But the guy who played him did kinda looked like a raven, with the nose and the chin, so I guess it's... ok.

What else, uh. Speaking of movies, they're apparently making on from Looking for Alaska. I should probably finish that book before it comes out. And it's kinda sad that it's not a given that I will finish it.

I really don't have anything interesting to say, I'm sorry.

I'll probably have the house to myself Sat-Sun night, because Mark and Kaija are going up to Canada, but I really don't feel like going with. Might do an allnighter, because screw sleep. Probably gonna draw for the whole weekend, and maybe watch some movies in the background. That's gonna be fun.

I've been thinking a lot about my dragon riders lately, but I don't really have anything new and exciting to tell about them. I've just been trying to flesh out some of the characters. Also random scenarios that will probably not end up in the final story, but I don't care it's fun to play around. I should probably start working on the dragons soon too, I have the most important human characters mostly thought out. Except I'm still kinda hazy about the King's motives. I just... I don't know. He needs some kind of motivation why he'd plunge all of the world into war. I need a brainstorm buddy, I think better out loud.

But hey, dragons! Oh, maybe they were hunted to near extinction, and that's why there's so few. After they were nearly wiped out, the King (perhaps not the same king, but like a previous one) was like, "hey hey, we can use them" and collected all the remaining dragons and their eggs and started training them and declared that all dragons are a property of the crow or whatever, that explains the fewness and the fact that they're all very similar in build and size, with a much smaller gene pool than everywhere else. Because in the land to the west the dragons are much more diverse in shape and size and ability. Does that make sense? And then one of the eggs was stolen! And it changed hands many time, with the king's guards trying to track it down. Until it ended in Lendá and Pin bought it on a whim from the traveling salesman. Then the guards caught up after it hatched and they took her to the king and the king was like "damn, it has attached to you" or something and she joined the dragon riders in hope of finding some adventure. Although I don't know if dragons attach to people, because they can have different riders.... Do reptiles have that same kind of imprint thing like birds do? Because maybe the dragon kinda considers Pin a mother type of thing, and that's why the king insisted she join. And like, the dragon (who I really should name) is willing to let others ride, but only because Pin asks and most certainly prefers Pin. Yeah, makes sense.

Maybe I'll skype someone this weekend and talk dragons. I'm very excited about dragons.

Guess that's all for now, ta~

Pie out.

P.S. Apparently this is our 100th post, so yay!

And there's the palettes, tell me what to draw!

Beautiful words

Hello.

This last week has been a long one. For once. We've both spent the last month or two starting our posts with something along the lines of "it's time to write a post again, where does the time go?" But his week lasted for ever.

Today I want to talk to you about words. Because words are pretty amazing.

I read years ago an article about how someone had made a poll to find what the most beautiful word in the Finnish language is. Or what people think is the most beautiful word. Though I don't think people can be wrong about this, really.

The word voted to be the most beautiful was aalto (wave).

For some reason I can't remember any more some days ago I started thinking about what makes a word beautiful. I figured it's two things.

1. The meaning of the word. I found that the word mother (also in the Finnish top-5 or something) was voted to be the most beautiful word in English. That is because when we say or think mother, we feel warm and fuzzy and safe. Or something. The point is, that we think words are beautiful, if we associate them with something we like, of enjoy, or something that just makes us feel good. Like mothers.
I think, that in Finnish aalto works this way, a little bit. Finland is referred to as the country of a thousand lakes, so we're familiar with waves. They're pretty much everywhere in our country. Not only that, but spending time near a water is probably mostly associated with vacation, and relaxing, and summer. It's warm for once, and you can go to the beach, or to a summer house that's away from everything, just take time to yourself, spend quality time with your family, forget about normal life and the stress that comes with it. That's the imagery waves bring to mind in Finland, so it is a word that makes us think about nice things.

2. The sound of a word when said aloud. What it feels like to say it. People generally like round letters. And by round I mean words that feel round. L and n and m a soft s, and vowels. You know, as a contrary to sharp letters like k and ch and the Finnish r (the English pronunciation is round, I think) and t, in a right context. Check is a much harder word than, well, wave, and nicer to say.
Aalto works here too. It is a word that feels nice to say. It feels good in your mouth.

When I googled about this, I found something weird about this. Well, not weird as such. A little confusing. It's one of those things that you would have never in a million years come to think of yourself, but when someone says it to you, your reaction is "oh... That's true. Wow."

Ok. Someone brilliant, or actually many people (including JRR Tolkien), has said that the most beautiful word in the English language is cellar door.

Yeah. Think about it. Say it out loud.
Say it again.

It's true. It is a very, very nice word (well, phrase, I guess?) to say out loud.

It's just that if you think about the meaning, it is a very, very weird word to win the title of the most beautiful word of a language.

The word that I think is at least one of the most beautiful ones, I think, fits in both these categories.

It is why.

I hope no explanation is needed.

I think this is enough for today. I'll hear from you on Friday.

Pie's Epic Recommendation Post

My internet is kinda sluggish but no matter.

So it's midsummer apparently. I kinda miss it, since I didn't get to do it last year either 'cause I went with Oona to... wherever it was we went, can't remember, not important. Point is I miss home. I guess.

Well anyway. Today I'll make some recommendations. Yay!

MOVIES:
  • Pacific Rim
There are robots and alien sea monsters and a lot of feels and it is not as machomacho as it sounds. The main characters are a puppy in a man's body and a petite Japanese woman who kicks ass. There is also bamf father figures, Russians, Chinese triplets and scientists both goofy and grumpy. It's good, I promise.
  • Now You See Me
I don't know if you've seen it but if you haven't watch it. There's magic and stuff. Also Morgan Freeman. And Mark Ruffalo. And Michael Caine. It's super cool.
  • Secret of Kells
That's an animation. It's about this island with a monastery and this little monk boy who lives there and wants to learn to make books. There's also a forest spirit type of person who helps him do stuff. The animation style is very unique and the story exciting and touching and I am so glad I randomly watched it one night.
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Come on. Just watch it already. In fact, here. That's the whole movie. (Should be anyway.)
TV:
  • Star Trek
  •  Pushing Daisies
Yes, we've watched it, but it is definitely worth rewatching. In fact I did that just last week. Also I don't think they showed the last ep in Finland?? I'm not sure?? Besides it's really short, like 25 eps or something.
  • Sleepy Hollow
There's only been one season of this so far but my god. It's about demons and horsemen and shit featuring Ichabod Crane, an US Independence War survivor (who's been like asleep for the past 250yrs), and Abbie Mills, a police officer who kinda gets swiped up into the whole apocalypse mess. It's cool. Also OH MY GOD THAT CLIFFHANGER WHEN DOES IT CONTINUE AAA. Anyway. It's like another 20 eps so there.
  • Almost Human
I talked about this before. It apparently got cancelled...*sobs* It was super good and had a lot of potential. ANDROIDS! COPS! KARL URBAN! It's awesome.
  • Doctor Who
Just watch it man. It's awesome. I mean the newest seasons are pretty full of plot holes and shit, but like the first 5 seasons are awesome.
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
It's a cop show, although with very little cop-ing. It's a sitcom, 30min episodes and the characters are hilarious. It only has one season as well so far, so it'll take like 11h to watch the whole thing.
  • Dark Angel
I've only just started watching this show, but so far it seems cool. It's kinda old and has... two seasons? Yep, ran from 2000 to 2002. It's about this badass chick who is like... I don't know, she was in this weird training facility when she was a kid and was maybe genetically engineered or sth? Anyway, it's great because it was people with different ethnicities and sexualities and it has Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly, who is hot in glasses. Also Jensen Ackles in the second season. I'm not there yet, but I've seen gifs.
GAMES:
  •  Pokemon
Pokemon is always good. You can probably get an emulator somewhere, or I can send you one if you can't. Personally I like the second gen games and their remakes the best, but they're all good.
  • Professor Layton
So if you're getting an emulator, you could get the Layton games too. They're puzzle games, where you progress with the story by solving riddles and picture puzzles and math problems and stuff. Also the style is cute and the music gorgeous. And there are several of them, so you won't run out. (They're all for the DS btw)
  • Minecraft
You've probably heard of Minecraft. If you haven't... wow. Anyway, I was kinda skeptical at first, but it is very fun to play. Building stuff and digging stuff and building even more stuff. It's especially fun with friends! We could play together! It costs a bit, but you know. Most games do. Play with me.....
  • Sims
If you have several hours to kill, building a sims family and then fucking it all up is really fun. Just so you know.
  • Dragons
  • I don't actually play strategy games, so I can't recommend anything, I'm sorry.
  • If you wanna play something online then uhh idk, I play TERA, which is a fantasy role playing game. You just kill monsters and complete quests and level up and shit. I'm not sure you'd be interested in it, but eh.
I was gonna recommend you fics but then I realized you probably don't wanna read them haha... Most of them would be Destiel anyway and I have no idea if you ship that, or anything for that matter. Now I'm actually kinda curious... Do you ship things? You do know what shipping is, right? Tell me in the comments. Everyone tell me! I wanna know!

Pie out.

Time

Today I have one question for you.

What do people do with all their time?

Or, rather, since people always seem to be complaining about not having enough time for anything, what would they do is they did have time.

Let me explain.

Since pretty much Christmas until a couple of weeks ago I spent almost all my free time studying. First I got four or five exams out of the way in the first two months, and then two months of trying to get myself to remember everything there is to remember in five courses of high school biology.

And then, suddenly, after the biology exam, I realise I have no idea what to do with myself. There's just so much time now that I don't have to spend it all studying. Now I have absolutely nothing I even should be doing. With that I have also noticed, that when you're trying to avoid doing something you should, it's easier than anything to spend all the time you have simply doing something else.

Simply said, I now have all the time in the world to do what ever I want with it, and no idea how to use it all.

So far this hasn't really been a problem. Right now what I'm doing is wake up in the morning, work for five-six hours, find myself something to eat, and then read for about eight hours, because I can't think of anything better to do (don't take me wrong, I think it's a great use of my time, though on many days around seven or eight I start feeling like I could do something else for a while). Which is why I have managed to read both of already published books of The Kingkiller Chronicle (yeah, I read the second one during the last week. When is the third one coming out!?), which means about 2000 pages. Yesterday I borrowed a couple of books from a friend, so I have something to read for the next couple of days. Then I'm out of books to read. Then I really won't know what to do with my time.

I mean, obviously there are a million books in the world I haven't even heard about, but I haven't heard about them, so that doesn't really help.

I can't even play my flute, because it's broken.

So what I need right now is either
1. Someone to tell me what normal people, who don't spend all their time reading books, do with all their time, so I can do that too.
2. Someone to tell me what I want to read next, preferably a series of thick fantasy novels.

I've also been told I should try playing a game over the internet with other people that from having absent-mindedly watched people playing a few games looks to me like it's a little like catch-the-flag, except instead of finding a flag, you have to destroy the other team's tower. I don't know. I've never learned to play video games.
Though I admit Portal is pretty cool.

Maybe I should buy a 2000-piece jigsaw puzzle.

Rain

Your shirt came, just so you know. I don't feel like posting it, you'll get it when I come over.

It's raining. I like rain. It makes the world quiet, nothing but the tap-tap-tap of the raindrops on the roof. I once wrote a short story about rain, let me see if I can find it.

Oh, there it is. It's in Finnish apparently, but since I have nothing else to say I'll just copy-paste it here. Enjoy!

Pie out.

Niitä on kiehtova katsella.
~x~
Rumtummtum. Kotona on hiljaista, kaikki puuhailevat omiaan. Juurikin aina oikea. Tlaptaptip.
~x~
Tap tapa tap.

Cheesecake and The Name of the Wind

Hello.

Today, I have two things for you.

1. Cheesecake.

This is a very, very random thing, but I thought I'd tell you anyway, because you like cheesecake. Because you're the one who ever makes cheesecake anywhere where I am.
You probably didn't know this, but we're going with Iita to cook on a protu camp in a few weeks. On that camp, we have two vegans. I decided that I want to make cheesecake for the people there some day, but the problem is, that vegans don't eat cheese. Or anything else (like gelatin) that comes from an animal, in case you for some reason didn't know.
Anyway, that means I have to make a cheesecake without cheese there, and so I dug up a recipe for a vegan version, and tried it out.
I had to make it in an oven, which was weird.
Also, it wasn't as good as cheesecake made of actual cheese, instead of soy cheese and yoghurt. I'm not saying it was bad. The consistency was a little weird and it wasn't as filling as a normal cheesecake.

Yes, of course this was a very important thing to tell you. Now you know.

Also, in case you didn't know (though I think you said you'd check out the eurovision), the Belarus' song in this year's eurovision was called Cheesecake. It was about how a guy dumps a girl after he gets fed up with her calling him "my sweet cheesecake".

2. The Name of the Wind

As in the book.

I've told you about it. I've told you to read it.
You haven't.

Anyway, I decided to reread, because it's amazing, so I started reading it on Wednesday, and just finished it 20 minutes ago.
When I started reading it, I came to the conclusion, that a book has to be really (a word I use waaay too much) amazing, if you're jumping-up-and-down-in-your-chair -excited to be reading it again.
I also came to the conclusion, that it's weirdly different to read a book when you've met the author (in the World Fantay Con last November, I explained this to you. My mind is still a little blown.).

While reading it, I started wondering how it can be that I have forgotten so much of the great details in the book. It has inly been two years since I first read it, after all.

The point is, you should read it. Go read. Now. I promise it's better than what ever it is you spend your time reading off of the internet.
Because it is probably the best fantasy series I have ever read. Still waiting for the third one to come out, though.

It's so good that about a year ago 20th century Fox bought the rights to make it into a TV series. Which I am eagerly waiting to see hoping that they won't screw it up. Though I can't find any information about the TV series that would've come out since then. Or when the third book would be coming out either.

It's so good, that while trying to find info about when about they might be getting it on TV, I found a page that said this:

Well, fellow geeks, these books are so incredibly good, you should have your geek credentials revoked until you’ve read them in their entirety. Twice.

Which is true. I also found another page, that said this:

Rothfuss Fans, Your Time Has Come: The Kingkiller Chronicle Optioned for TV Series
Somewhere George R.R. Martin just felt a disturbance in the force.

Which probably isn't quite as funny as I think, going insane waiting for the next books for both series. But I can assure you, it is funnier than what you think, since you haven't read or watched either.

In short: I just want to go around blabbering about this to people but it's just me and mom and my ex-roommate who I know have read it, and no one else can really understand what I'm talking about, so that kinda limits my overpouring of excitement.
But...
...I forgot what I was going to say.
Probably nothing important.

I want to go start The Wise Man's Fear now.
No, actually I want someone to come eat my cheesecake.
I also want to know the results of the biology exam.
Oh, right, I probably didn't say anything about that last week. It was a week and a half ago on Friday. I have three more weeks to wait, and I have absolutely no idea how it went. It completely depends on if I happened to write down the things they were looking for. Though if they were looking for more, then no an do, because I literally wouldn't have had any room to say anything more to any of the questions. My own estimate is that I'll reach about the points that you needed last year to get in, but I might be giving myself points way too easily, or holding back on them way too much, so I really don't know.
So I'm going insane over that too.

And yeah, I know you got into a school, I was the one opening the envelope. So, no news there.

Now I'm gonna go.

~matu

PS. Go check acrossapuddle's GoogleDrive, I did a little something for the thing we talked about the other night.

Stuff

Guess who has nothing to say again! Also my internet is kinda sluggish, ugh.

I really wanna be able to talk to you about cool, interesting stuff, but there is nothing in my life right now. I got into university by the way. So at least that's a thing that has happened.

I also should start choosing my return date, but I don't know when I want it to be. Like, school starts beginning of September, but if I leave to get home by then I'll be like three weeks or so short of the full year. Also I kinda wanna travel a bit, but not alone and I don't find the idea of an organized trip with 20 random people very appealing, sooo... I dunno.

Okay, what have I done since last Friday. Well Leila's party was on Saturday, it was pretty cool. Everybody loved my cake, heehee. It turned out really good. I mean, the frosting was a bit shitty and there wasn't enough about it anyway, but I improvised and it turned out ok. Besides the cake part was yummy one way or another, so I really would've needed to screw up with the frosting for it to be bad. It was the chocolate cake Aatu has dubbed "the Inception Cake" (it's called Devil's Cake in the cook book) because I made it the first time we watched Inception. I kinda like it and since it's kinda become my signature cake, I'm trying to think of a way to make it more Inception. A cake within a cake, but I'm not sure how that works. It's still under development.

We're going to Canada this afternoon. And we'll be there until Wednesday. Wednesday. I'm not sure I can cope without an internet connection for that long. I mean, of course I can but I really really don't want to. I do have plenty of TV series and a few movies on my laptop I can watch but still.

I wanna draw something cool, give me a prompt.

I'm really running out of things to say, I'm sorry I'm boring. Whatever, bye~

Pie out.

Trains

Oh, damn, it's Tuesday again.

For the past week, it seems to me, all I've been doing is travel.

Last Wednesday I woke up at five, sat in a train for a half an hour, in a plane for four hours, in a car for another half, in another train for two more. Then I spent 24-ish hours at home.
Then I sat in a train again for two hours. The next day I sat in the biology exam for a few hours, and then another two in a car. Then I had a whole Saturday of doing absolutely nothing, just for the joy of having absolutely nothing I should have been doing.
Then on Sunday I sat in a train for two hours, a few hours in a meeting, and another five hours in a train. And then, yesterday and today, I've worked for altogether 16 hours and earned myself enough money to eat for half a summer. At least.
And then, tomorrow morning, I will go sit in a train for another three and a half hours. And after that the next time I have to go anywhere is still a month away, so I can finally just not move around all the time for a while.

So....
What interesting to write about can I get out of that... Out of trains.

Fun fact. The width of Finnish rail roads is five feet. Yes. Five feet. Let me tell you a story about that dad literally just told me.

Ok, so the Finnish rail roads are built at the same time with the Russian rail roads, obviously, because back at the time Finland was a part of Russia, and back then they built it to be five feet (which, for future reference, is 1524 mm).
Then came the Russian revolution in 1917, and the Bolsheviks got the power. Bolsheviks, not wanting to be friends with the western Europe, decided that they don't want to have their rail roads a width according to the the feet measuring system, not because feet are a stupid way of measuring, but because it was the English way to measure things, and they wanted to have they're rail road width according to the metric system.
And in the metric system 1524 mm is not practical, because it's, well, not exactly anything. So they decided, that they need to round it down to 1520 mm. And because of this, the people had to go around and take 4 mm out of the width of the raid roads with sledge hammers or something. (I don't know if the part with sledge hammers is actually true, but that's what dad said.)
As you know, around the same with the Russian revolution, Finland got it's independence, so Finland was like "Yeah, what ever guys, we don't really care that much what width our rail roads are", so the Finnish rail roads are still five feet.
And because Russia used to be the only place with that width rail roads, now Finland in the only country in the world with rail roads the width of exactly five feet.
Since having the measurement in feet isn't stupid enough.

Here, have a map of the widths of the rail roads in the world. From Wikipedia, of course.

Now I need to go eat, so we still have the time to catch Maleficent with Iita and Aatu.
