Carol, Part 7 - Socks

I press my hands on my face. What are we doing? Why on earth did we hole up here, why did we even take the elemental with us? I don't have time for this, we need to write a whole new song and practice it and I have a ton of school work to top that off. I let out a groan and thump my head back on the door.

"What do we do now?" Leea asks and I let my hands fall to my sides.

"I have no idea," I say. She lets out a thoughtful noise and then looks around.

"Y'know, I don't think I've been to your room before," she says and picks through the note sheets on my music stand. "It's just as clean and organized as I expected. Although I thought there'd be at least a few stray socks on the floor. Or underwear." She looks at me and grins. I roll my eyes. The elemental hops off my bed and patters around the room for a bit. Leea turns her attention back at it. "Where you going Flame? Did you find something juicy?"

"There is nothing "juicy" in my room, Leea," I say humourlessly as the elemental reaches the small basket I keep my yarn and unfinished knittings in. It digs through it and then pulls out a long woolen sock that has a hole in the heel. I've been meaning to fix that.

"Wow, there's a lot of yarn here," Leea says as she kneels next to the basket. "You always do wear a lot of knitted things, do you make them all yourself?"

"It's a hobby, don't judge," I say. "Something to keep my hands busy with."

"I think it's cool. I really suck at knitting myself. Not even my scarfs look like scarfs." She lets out a short laugh.

"Dah!" says Flame and lifts its hands in the air. I look down at it and snort. It's wearing the sock now, the leg wrapped around its torso, its feet sticking out from the hole in the heel. It wags its tail, which is tucked into the foot of the sock, and it looks utterly ridiculous. Leea lets out a small giggle as well. Flame turns back to the basket and pulls out the scarf I'm currently working on - a Christmas gift to mom - and wraps it around itself. Something occurs to me.

"Do you think it's cold?" I ask and Leea looks up at me. "I mean, it's a fire elemental, they don't handle cold that well."

"You could be right," she says, rubbing her chin. "You could knit her some clothes? It'd keep her warm and also kinda hidden."

I don't have time to reply when the doorbell rings. I can hear Tony's footsteps as he answers the door, and some muffled conversation before the footsteps move to the stairs.

"Brilliant," I mutter and scramble to pile a few rolls of yarn on top of Flame, who has curled on the floor with my knittings, to hide her completely. Tony's head pops through the door.

"It's for you," he says and looks around the room.

"Who is it?" I ask and he glances at me before shrugging and leaving the room. I exchange a confused look with Leea and stand up. "Keep her hidden," I whisper to her and she nods, placing a hand on the pile of yarn.

I walk downstairs and to the door.
