It's a cold day, but not biting, as Wind isn't here today. Clouds are, though, and it's going to snow later, but not yet, they aren't quite ready. I lay in the midst of the naked branches and stare up at their gray blanket.
The girl walks by. My ear twitches as I hear the crunch of frozen ground under her boots as she trots along the path up the Hill. I sit up quickly and look over, just managing to catch her glancing at the Tree before turning her gaze ahead again. I watch her as she passes. I worry my lip between my teeth, considering for a moment, before getting up and fluttering after her.
She reaches the top and climbs on the Boulder. She always does. She sits there for a while looking at the sky and I sit in a tree nearby and look at her. Snow starts falling around her. I'm slightly disappointed the Clouds don't have the decency to make it a nice snowfall, but that's Weather for you. They really don't care what you think is appropriate.
She shivers. An all encompassing shiver, where her whole body shakes and you can see the cold pass through. She stretches and gets up. Then she slips. And catches herself. And gets back on the path.
I let out the breath I was holding. Then I fly after her.
An idea strikes me. I fly over her and ahead before stopping far enough for her to not see me. I concentrate. Visualize.
A faint glow appears on the road as I summon forth my full arcane powers and materialize it. The glow swirls for a bit before it takes shape. Saplings sprout on the side of the road, up and around, until they meet and grow together. An arch.
She arrives. She pauses. She steps forward, hesitant. It takes all my focus to keep the door stable and existing. She pulls off the thing on her hand--a... a sock? That's something I've heard her talk about--and reaches over. She pushes it through.
Come on... Come on!
"Don't be stupid, Charlie," she says out loud, to herself, to no one, to me. She puts her hand back in the sock and steps off the path just enough to get around the door.
And then she walks off.
I let my concentration go and the door dissipates, turning back into energy and drifting away in the wind. I'm disappointed, though at her for not going through of at myself for even considering it, I don't know. What was I even thinking? What would I have even done if she'd come through?
Not a good place to be for a human, the Realm of the Faeries.
