Cinnamon, Part 22 - Hideout

The wake up was early. Very early. Before the sun had risen. During the night I had been brought new clothes, that included a surprisingly light chain mail and a golden over tunic, probably made from the magic wool. There was also the green hooded cape and mask that everyone else also had. After I dressed, I braided my hair and attached the golden feather to the end with a piece of string.

Outside, everyone was preparing. Tents were being torn down, breakfast was eaten and weapons were polished and sharpened. When I stepped out of the tent everyone seemed to quiet for a second and looked at me. They were all so happy, so excited. I couldn't imagine how. They were walking to a war, and not all would be walking back and the rest wouldn't be the same. But still I smiled at them, a little awkwardly, and waved my hand, and they soon turned back to their preparations. Lu brought me breakfast when I sat down by the fire, and another bag of the honeyed nuts as she had once before. ("I thought you'd need a little something extra," she said with a small smile. I thanked her before she disappeared to get food for the other soldiers.) It felt like such a long time ago, I could hardly believe it had been only a dozen of days. I eat my breakfast alone.

Azer, Em and Narada found me soon after I'd finished.

"Today is the day," Azer said. "Are you ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be, I guess," I said. I wasn't all that convinced of this whole plan, but I had to try, didn't I? Azer nodded in approval.

"We'll be counting on you," he said.

"Just do your best," Em said with a smile. "I know you'll be fine."

Then they left, and I was alone with Narada. She gave me more arrows to fill my quiver and I thanked her as I put them in.

"We should leave as soon as possible," she said and I nodded. "Are you ready to go?"

~x~

On the way to get the lemon from where we'd hidden it the previous evening we ran into Pessi and Hizi. Pessi had his crossbow and he would be stationed in the trees, where he could shoot without being immediately noticed, and Hizi had two small daggers and would be part of the foot soldiers.

"Are you sure you'll be okay?" I asked him. "I mean, isn't it in the middle of the battlefield the most dangerous place to be?"

"It'll be fine," he said with a shrug. "I'm fairly good at dodgin' and if all else fails, I can always use a bit of magic."

"You have magic?"

"Yeah. Din't I tell ya?" I shook my head. "Oh. Well goblins are among the only trolls who can wield magic. It's not super powerful, like elves' or faes', but it's effective enough and it's earth magic, so it'll be good for protection as well. Don't worry about me, just do what you can. I'll be fine."

I gave both of them a long hug and wished them luck, before they left and we continued to the lemon. After that we headed to our hideout, where we set down our things and waited.

Ugh, I want to continue but I don't know how. So you get to do that now. Two more parts!

I just realized, I am the one who's gonna write the last part (unless we continue to the 25th day! No? Ok..). Oh god. Endings are hard. I apologize in advance that I won't be able to put it all together, but I will try my best.

Your topic is Light! Make it good!

Pie out.
